How We Measure Your Eyes for the Perfect Contact Lens Fit

Thinking about switching from glasses to contacts? Finding the right fit is the key to comfort and clear vision. It is not just about getting the right prescription strength. We need to measure the unique shape of your eyes to make sure your lenses fit perfectly.

It Starts With a Full Eye Exam

Before we proceed with measurements, we start with a comprehensive eye exam. This helps us check your overall eye health and get your exact vision prescription. We will also look for any conditions that could affect your comfort, like dry eyes or astigmatism.

Mapping the Shape of Your Eye

Your cornea plays a significant role in determining the fit of your contact lenses. The shape of your cornea is as unique as your fingerprint. For the lens to sit comfortably and stay in place, we need to know the shape of your cornea. This helps us determine the “base curve” of the lens.

Getting this right is important because it ensures the lens is not too tight or too loose on your eye. A well-fitting lens should be stable and comfortable, not shifting around or causing irritation.

If your eyes tend to get dry, we recommend materials that retain moisture better, keeping your eyes comfortable throughout the day.

Finding the Right Lens Size and Fit

Next, we measure the size of your pupil and iris. These measurements help us determine the correct lens diameter. The lens needs to cover your iris properly, neither too large nor too small.

Once we have these measurements, it is time for the trial fit. You will try on a pair of trial lenses based on all the measurements we have taken. You will wear them for a little while in the office, and we will check how they feel and perform.

Checking the Fit and Comfort

Here’s where we get a little more detailed. We use a microscope called a slit lamp to closely examine how the trial lenses sit on your eyes. We check how the lenses move when you blink. A tiny bit of movement is normal; it helps bring in oxygen and fresh tears to keep your eyes comfortable.

We also make sure the lenses are centered properly on your eyes. If there is any irritation or redness, we will address it before finalizing your prescription.

Getting You Ready for Daily Wear

After assessing the trial lenses, we will finalize your prescription. This includes more than just the power of your lenses; it also covers the brand, material, and curvature. We will also discuss which wearing schedule fits your lifestyle best. Would daily disposables or monthly lenses work better for you?

Then, we will show you how to care for your lenses. We will guide you through the steps for safely installing and removing them. If you are using reusable lenses, we will also teach you how to clean and store them properly.

Follow-Up for Perfect Fit

Your journey does not end when you leave our office. We will schedule a quick follow-up appointment, typically after you have worn your new lenses for one to two weeks. This gives us a chance to make sure everything still feels perfect. If any small adjustments are needed, we will handle them during this visit.
